Asia Pulp & Paper Launches Australian Advertising Campaign

  • Four 30 second television advertorials highlight sustainability commitments in Indonesia
  • Print advertisements placed in metropolitan media
  • Follows announcement of $20m conversion facility to be built by Solaris Paper in Western Sydney

(Jakarta) Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), today extends its effort to share with global audiences its aspirations for sustainable paper-making, with the launch of television and print media advertorials in Australia.

Four 30 second advertorials are being broadcast on terrestrial television from 13th April onwards. Each advertorial explains an aspect of APPs sustainability initiatives including tree planting, poverty alleviation, sustainability and tackling climate change. 60 second versions of these advertorials are already showing on CNN International globally.

Supporting print advertisements will run in metropolitan newspapers beginning with the advertisement “Let’s Get the Facts Down on Paper” and published in conjunction with our Australian affiliate Solaris Paper. In March 2010 Solaris Paper announced that it will open a manufacturing facility in Australia producing high-quality tissue products and employing around 50 Australians.

“These advertorials are part of a global effort to ensure a balanced dialogue about APP’s operations and our commitment to sustainable paper making in Indonesia,” said Aida Greenbury, APP’s Director of Sustainability and Stakeholder Outreach. “We acknowledge that some viewers in developed countries may still not be aware of the unique sustainability challenges and opportunities in Indonesia and the efforts that private sector companies including APP are making to address those challenges. We recognize that those same people may attack these advertisements as “green-washing” or insincere. We want our Australian customers to know that APP is committed to building a long-term environmentally sustainable pulp and paper industry in Indonesia.”

“Indonesia is keen to learn from the mistakes made by developed countries in balancing economic development and preservation of vital natural resources and habitat,” said Phillip Lawrence, principal of Eco Strategies, a Sydney based environmental consultancy. “I have been involved in the printing and paper industry for over thirty years and I can tell you that the efforts by APP and its wood suppliers compare favourably with many companies in richer, developed, nations.”

In addition to planting and afforesting large areas of Indonesia with sustainable forestry plantations APP supports its suppliers in setting aside 500,000 hectares of forest for conservation projects, which also acts as a massive store of carbon. APP is also committed to reducing its own carbon footprint and to maintaining the carbon capture in its products through use of recycled material.

APP believes that a true commitment to sustainability and biodiversity protection can be achieved only by working together with a wide range of stakeholders, including government, community, NGO, academics and industry partners. In Indonesia, APP is implementing sustainability pillars with an equal balance of protecting biodiversity and endangered species; supporting greenhouse gas reduction and carbon sequestration through sustainable plantations that combat global warming; and promoting sustainable economic development in Indonesia as a whole.
